Using the map

Is there a printable/offline version of the map?

Yes! There's a PDF version which you can print out. Just click on "PDF map" in the top bar.

How do I see the whole map?

You can drag the background of the map to see more stations.

How do I hear the pronounciation of a station?

To hear the pronounciation of a station, click on the circular station symbol to pop up the information bubble. Then click the small "play" button which appears in the top right.

How do I find a station on the map?

There's a search box in the top left corner of the screen. Click and type part of the name of a station. A list of matching station names will be displayed. Choose a station to jump directly there.

Planning routes

How do I find the time/distance between two stations?

Click and hold your mouse on the first station, then drag to a second station and release the mouse. The suggested route, ticket price and a time estimate will be shown.

Why is the suggested route between stations X and Y wrong?

The routeplanner is not perfect yet, and doesnt always pick the most sensible route. Routes which involve changing lines more than once are most likely to have problems. If you have specific suggestions on a journey which you think the routeplanner doesn't work well on, please contact us.

What does changing lines at Shanghai Railway Station, Yishan Road or Hongkou Stadium "require a public transportation card".

These stations are so-called "virtual transfer stations". For example, at Shanghai Railway station, the line 1 and line 3/4 stations are some distance apart, and its normally necessary to leave the station and buy a new ticket if you want to change there. However, if you have a pre-paid public transportation card (similar to the London Oyster card or Hong Kong Octopus card), you are not charged for a second ticket. The routeplanner will suggest changing at a virtual transfer station only if it calculates you will save time compared to a more indirect route.

For webmasters

Can I include the Metro map on my site?

We're currently planning how to best let other sites use our content. Sorry, at this time you may not embed the map in your site. If you have a business proposal, please get in touch.

How should I link to the Metro map?

You're very welcome to link to our site! Please use the URL http://www.exploreshanghai.com.

Other Shanghai Metro sites

What is the official site of the Shanghai Metro?

www.shmetro.com, currently in Chinese only

What other sites are there about the Shanghai Metro?

The most up-to-date information on the Shanghai Metro system can be found on two Chinese-language forums, Ditiezu and Metrofans. For English information you can try the Wikipedia article or the Shanghai Public Transportation blog written by Micah Sittig.
